Since the birth of the railway age steam locomotives have had a fascination for adults and children alike. Sadly few people can now experience the magic of steam, but some fortunate children of Sandstone estate’s workers have a virtually 100% steam railway passing close by their homes. The accompanying picture shows one of Sandstone’s Garratts on the Vailima extension during the recent Winter Steam event. What better way to introduce the next generation to steam locomotives, which will hopefully translate into lasting interest and possibly taking up a career in engineering.
