The jewel in the crown at Sandstone is our wonderful breeding herd of Bont Afrikaners. The Afrikaner draft animal is symbolic and entwined with South Africa’s culture having been the primary form of transport from the late 1600’s into the early 1900’s. The Afrikaners of years gone are not like the current conventional beef animal. The Bont Afrikaner is multicoloured and is characterised by big horns and a physique which is more geared towards being a draft animal than a pure beef animal. We may be the only farm in the world that breeds, trains, and uses these placid patient draft animals on a daily basis.
In recent years we also became concerned about the welfare of donkeys. As a result we are currently breeding, training, and using multicoloured rare Bont donkeys in much the same way as the oxen are deployed.
