Sandstone’s Road Steam division is unique as there are very few operating Steam Road Engines in South Africa.
Our 35-ton 1901 B5 Fowler Road locomotive dating back to the Anglo-Boer War is capable of pulling 80 tons, and this is joined by a large cross-section of portable steam agricultural engines used to pump water, power threshing boxes and to perform tasks in the pre-Internal Combustion engine era. We are particularly proud of our two Steam road rollers which made a significant contribution to road building as far back as the late 1800’s and well into the 1950’s.
