WN14 – A drop ‘O culture – by Kerry Young

Have just come back from an open garden afternoon. The place is in Governors Bay and is called Ohinetahi. (Oh-hin-ee- taa- hee.) Home of Sir Miles Warren. Premier architect. We were to have a look around and be entertained by the Hillmorton Girls School Choir, with dainty afternoon tea to follow. Does that sound like my Wife? Hell yes! So of course, you came along with me and here’s what we saw. (Well, some of it anyway.)
Seeing as how it sits on the inside rim of an extinct volcano, it slopes considerably and too, it spans a gully. So before you gain entry, this is one of the views from the road above………………
Although you cannot appreciate it, the drop is quite steep and the picture is really looking very steeply down.
The first view we had of the house. The building on the right, is the garden shed. (Johan, lots of room for old iron. If you can lower it down the slope!)
Swing to the left and we see the lawn and away out into Lyttelton Harbour.
Just below seems to be the work of a topiary expert.

As I said, the place has a gully and there are a number of bridges spanning the gully and the stream that goes with it. This suspension bridge was crying out to be pictured. It’s a pity you can’t make out the suspension wires.
This was as far back as I could get for a full frontal of the house.

How does that suit you? I was unable to get a better picture without falling down the gully.
The choral entertainment in progress. I must admit, they were really good too.
While the singing was in progress, this young lass chose to park herself right there and I chose to capture the moment.

…………..you came across these summer houses. Really great!
