Sandstone’s acquisition of the two Royal Train coaches of 1947 came to the attention of one of our readers, Dr Brian Austin, who is a member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers.
Dr Austin wrote an article on the complexities of radio communications on the Royal Train in 1947, an essential element of safety and security for the Royal family. With his permission we are publishing the article which appeared in “wattnow”, the SAIEE Journal of April 2022. Although almost 70 years ago, the article highlights the complexities of and the story of the design, installation and operation of the unique radio communications system installed on the train.
